Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty
A blepharoplsty procedure is a purely cosmetic surgical procedure that is used to correct the deformities, defects and disfigurations that might affect a person’s eyelids. This is a purely plastic surgery and aims to improve the aesthetic aspects of the lower eyelids and their surrounding facial region.
This cosmetic surgery
involves removing, or repositioning (or both) of the excess tissues such as adipocyte fat (sub-cutaneous facial fat) and the skin as well as reinforcing the underlying muscles and tendons. This surgery also addresses problems caused in the ‘periorbita’ – the region of face between the eyebrow and the upper part of the cheeks.
This surgery’s goal is to restore the correct functioning of the affected eyelid as well as restoration of the aesthetic aspects of the eye-region which is achieved by removing excessive skin from the eyelids and smoothening the underlying eye muscles along with tightening the support structure and also by removing the excessive facial skin under the eyes and re-draping it by stretching it tight over the retroseptal area of the eye.
Need for Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty
In case you feel that the skin under your eyes has formed bags and has become loose and is giving you an unappealing appearance then you might want to consider undergoing a lower eyelid blepharoplsty in order to remove the excess tissues from under the eyelids as well as tightening the skin over the region in order to make it look more youthful and fresh.
Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty procedures
There are several techniques used to perform a lower eyelid blepharoplsty, such as:
- Traditional blepharoplasty – This involves making an incision in the skin below the eyelashes. The skin is lifted and the membrane which holds the lower lid fat pads is exposed to the surgeon. The surgeon will penetrate the membrane and remove certain amount of fat from these fat pads using a very fine needle. The fat is removed until the lower eyelid becomes flat. The surgeon will also remove a small piece (2-4 mm) of excessive skin is removed.
- Pinch blepharoplsty – This is also a conventional form of lower eyelid blepharoplasty. It requires making an incision in the lower eyelid to remove the excess fat followed by a pinch of skin without disturbing the deeper tissues or muscles.
- Laser blepharoplsty – This is a relatively modern method of performing a lower eyelid blepharoplasty. The surgeon uses a high-energy and very thin, yet powerful, beam of laser light to remove the excess fat from the lower eyelid region.
- Transconjuctival blepharoplasty – This technique requires making an incision inside the lower eyelid rather than in the skin outside, generally, with the help of an electro-cauterization device. The surgeon will remove a part of the fat pads. This technique is ideally considered for considerably younger patients with bulging fat and no extra skin.
A lower eyelid blepharoplasty is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgeries and is most popular with women worldwide. This cosmetic surgery helps to get rid of the unattractive bags of skin that form under the eyes, mostly due to old age and helps to give you a new and more youthful appearance.
